Window pane replacement

A damaged window pane does not always mean the entire window must be replaced. The right scope depends on the glass arrangement and the condition of the sash and frame around it.

Identify the type of window

Older single-pane windows, sealed double-pane assemblies and divided-light designs need different replacement approaches. Describe the opening and any labels already visible from a safe position. Avoid removing stops or handling cracked glass to obtain measurements; approximate dimensions or existing records are enough to start the enquiry, with final measurements confirmed separately.

Consider the surrounding condition

A cracked pane may be the most visible issue, but loose joints, deterioration or a window that no longer operates correctly can affect the work. Let the enquiry explain these concerns. A glass-only scope should be agreed only after it is clear that the existing assembly is suitable for the proposed replacement.

Questions before
the next step.

Can a cracked pane be left in place until an appointment?

Its condition cannot be judged safely from a description alone. Keep people away from damaged glass and ask about appropriate next steps; do not assume it is stable.

Will the new pane fix a window that sticks?

Sticking may involve the sash, frame or hardware. Describe it as a separate concern so the scope is not limited to the glass by mistake.
